Dumbbell Nebula

Camera

Canon 20Da

Date 17 July 2006
Description The Dumbbell Nebula (M27) is about 1200 light years away and is thought to represent the state that our own sun will achieve near the end of its lifespan. When a sun dies, it sheds its outer layers in an expanding cloud of gas (called a planetary nebula). The gas is illuminated by the central star.
Processing The picture is a combination of 3 shots, 4 minutes each, at ISO 1600. Taken from our driveway with an AP 160 using an ST4 autoguider connected to an AP guide scope. The camera had an IDAS light pollution filter. Pictures aligned, combined and contrast enhanced in ImagesPlus.
